Counselor Notes
Sophomores are encouraged to apply to attend the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership Seminar. One sophomore will be chosen to represent Larned High School at a seminar this summer where tenth graders have the opportunity to meet, interact with, and question regionally, nationally, and internationally renowned leaders. HOBY's purpose is to bring together a select group of high school sophomores who have demonstrated leadership ability so that they can interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education, and the professions to discuss present and future issues. Contact Mrs. Johnson by October 7 if you are interested in applying.
Juniors, are you interested in a Service Academy ( US Military Academy, US Naval Academy, US Air Force, US Merchant Marine) Nomination from Congress? Deadline: October 1.
All high school students are invited to apply for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. You could win $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. next May for making a difference through volunteering. Go to http://spirit.prudential.com to access the online application and certification page, complete by November 1 and give to Jeanette Johnson.
Juniors are encouraged to meet with Mrs. Johnson about post-secondary plans throughout the rest of the month of September. Parents are also invited to discuss plans, ask questions, and review information.

It takes courage to stand up for your beliefs. Some elected officials risk their careers to do right by their community and country. In Profiles in Courage, John F. Kennedy described eight US elected officials who demonstrated political courage. Here’s your chance to write a new profile in courage. Visit Profile in Courage Award Program at www.jfklibrary.org.
